At Chroma, we’ve always believed that our work extends beyond the walls we paint. Last month, our team packed our bags and headed south to Mexico for what turned out to be much more than just a business planning retreat.
Business with Purpose
The trip began with productive sessions alongside our software development team. Together, we’re creating something game-changing for the trades industry – software that helps businesses make more informed decisions, streamline customer communications and billing, and create estimates. All of this is available natively in both Spanish and English with just the flip of a button.
But as exciting as our software development is, it was what happened outside the conference room that truly defined our trip.
More Than Just Visitors
“People really have it rough out there, but they are so happy and survive off of so little.”
These words from Emily Kurt, our Director of Commercial Partnerships, perfectly capture what struck our team most during our visit to a local orphanage.
We spent time playing basketball, singing, dancing, and engaging in epic rock-paper-scissors battles (there was one young girl who was absolutely unbeatable). In these moments, language barriers dissolved, and genuine human connection took center stage.

I think it helps because now I've been a part of it, and I'm like, this is what we do.

Discovering Potential
Among the many children we met, one 12-year-old girl stood out. Despite her circumstances, she had developed a passion for coding and technology. Her eyes lit up when discussing her future aspirations in the tech world.
We’re now working to connect her with tools and educational resources to nurture this talent – because sometimes all it takes is someone believing in your potential and providing access to opportunities.
Showing Up with More Than Just Words
Our team didn’t arrive empty-handed. We brought diapers, formula, bottles, cleaning supplies, non-perishable foods, toys, and sports equipment. But perhaps more valuable than these material goods was the time spent, the relationships built, and the promise to continue supporting these children.
The Reality Check We All Needed
Many of our best painting crews come from Latin American countries, and this trip gave us firsthand insight into the realities many face in these regions. Between our experiences at this orphanage and our ongoing efforts in Honduras, our team gained a profound appreciation for what we often take for granted in the US.
We witnessed communities with significant needs in nutrition, clean water, and education – areas where we have the resources to make a real difference. Yet equally striking was the joy, resilience, and positive attitudes we encountered among people with far less material wealth than most Americans have.
Strengthening Our Team by Strengthening Others
Working together toward something greater than ourselves didn’t just benefit the orphanage – it strengthened our bonds as a team. As we often say, “People over profits any day!” This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s how we approach our business every day.
The Alpha Foundation: Our Vehicle for Change
This experience embodies the mission of our Alpha Foundation, which is dedicated to empowering families in vulnerable communities with support tailored to their unique strengths and needs. We’re committed to fostering self-sustaining futures, breaking dependency cycles, and helping create brighter, more secure lives.
Our vision is a future where communities flourish with access to educational resources, economic opportunities, and stronger community bonds. Through sustainable initiatives, we aim to equip individuals with the skills and support needed to build prosperous, self-reliant lives.
Start Your Own Journey of Impact
Wondering how your business can make a similar difference? Start by finding a community that connects with your area of expertise. Look at their specific needs and develop a plan to engage others in meeting those needs.
The impact doesn’t have to be international – meaningful change often starts right in your backyard. The key is taking that first step beyond business as usual.
